[the Phœnician gadis means hedge ], a famous colony of the Phœnicians established on an island of the same name in Hispania Baetica, the modern Cadiz, Mel. 2, 7, 1; 3, 6, 1; Plin. 4, 22, 36, § 120; Cic. Fam. 10, 32, 1; id. de Sen. 19, 69; Liv. 21, 21; Hor. C. 2, 2, 11; 2, 6, 1. Called also Gadir or Gaddir (Gr. ta Gadeira), Sall. Fragm. ap. Prisc. p. 648 and 698 P. (Hist.
